Almost all EU leaders adopted a statement in support of Ukraine ahead of the meeting between US President Donald Trump and the Russian usurper. The text of the EU leaders’ statement, approved late on August 11, reads “We, the leaders of the European Union, welcome President Trump’s efforts to end Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and achieve a just and lasting peace and security for Ukraine,” the document says.
EU leaders emphasize that “international borders must not be changed by force,” “the people of Ukraine must have the freedom to decide their own future,” and “the path to peace in Ukraine cannot be determined without Ukraine.”
EU leaders stressed that “the European Union, in coordination with the US and other like-minded partners, will continue to provide political, financial, humanitarian, military, and diplomatic support to Ukraine” and “will continue to support and implement restrictive measures against the Russian Federation.”
In addition, the EU is ready to make an additional contribution to security guarantees for Ukraine.
The prime ministers of Britain and Canada have joined the European Union in supporting Ukraine. In a telephone conversation on Monday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the peace efforts but warned against “imposing” an agreement on Ukraine. They discussed their unwavering support for Ukraine and the ongoing work to end the killings and bring Russia’s aggressive war to an end.
Both leaders emphasized that Ukraine’s future must be one of freedom, sovereignty, and self-determination. Both Kim Starmer and Mark Carney will continue to work closely with President Trump and President Zelensky in the coming days.
Recall that the President of Ukraine stated that Ukraine will not make territorial concessions to Russia during the discussion of a peace agreement and noted that “the answer to the Ukrainian territorial issue is already in the Constitution of Ukraine.”
All of the above clearly demonstrates the extraordinary unity and clarity of the position of the entire Western world. Trump himself remains uncertain.
Is he tired of Putin’s war and promises to end it? Trump will achieve nothing with such fatigue. If he stops supporting Ukraine, other manufacturers will fill this niche, which is rich in supplies of various weapons.
It is also beneficial for Europeans that Putin’s war does not spread beyond Ukraine’s borders. Otherwise, they will have to invest even more in defense spending. In addition, spending on compensation for their citizens who have been killed or wounded will increase. Europeans do not want to spend their money on this. On the contrary, European defense companies are interested in increasing orders.
Therefore, if Trump’s policy causes our American defense companies to reduce their supplies of products to Ukrainian defenders, this will lead to a decrease in production volumes and jobs.
