Rutte thanks Germany for funding NATO initiative to supply US weapons to Ukraine

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has thanked Germany for funding a $500 million aid package for Ukraine. Tagesschau quotes his statement.

Rutte thanked Germany for funding a $500 million package of military equipment for Ukraine, which the US will supply.

“This supply will help Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression,” the NATO Secretary General said.

Germany announced on Wednesday, August 13, that it would finance NATO’s Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, under which it will continue to supply Ukraine with American weapons.

“I commend Germany for stepping up once again. This delivery will help Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression,” said the Secretary General. “Germany is the largest European contributor of military aid to Ukraine, and today’s announcement further underlines its commitment to help the Ukrainian people defend their freedom and sovereignty,” he added.

The announcement came during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Berlin and large-scale negotiations involving European and US leaders ahead of a meeting of US and Russian leaders in Alaska.

The US and NATO have launched a new mechanism for providing Ukraine with American weapons—the Priority Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), which provides for funding through contributions from other members of the Alliance.

The Netherlands, within the framework of the PURL, has prepared a $500 million aid package for Ukraine, which includes components and missiles for the Patriot air defense system.

Sweden, Norway, and Denmark will jointly allocate about $500 million.

Latvia has announced that it will contribute at least $2 million, but the final figure is still being agreed upon.
