Germany calls on the EU to look for air defense systems for Ukraine

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said that he and Germany’s Defense Minister, Boris Pistorius, had sent a joint letter to European allies with the aim of finding opportunities to transfer additional air defense systems to Ukraine to help the country defend itself from Russian missile and drone attacks.

Johann Wadephul made this statement during a press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Sybiha in Kyiv on Monday, June 30.

During his visit to Kyiv, the German Foreign Minister emphasized that Russia has intensified its missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian regions in recent weeks.

“Therefore, we need even more air defense systems capable of protecting Ukraine at all frequencies and at all altitudes,” the German foreign minister stressed.

Wadephul assured that Berlin “will use all possible means” and spoke about a letter to Germany’s European partners.

“Of course, German industry is trying to increase its capacity. We will also discuss this again with our European partners, and there is a joint letter from German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and myself to our European partners to check whether all the systems you have available are really necessary now or whether individual systems can be transferred to Ukraine,” the German Foreign Minister said.

On the same day, Johann Wadephul said that a delegation from the defense industry had arrived in Kyiv.

On May 28, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov signed an agreement in Berlin on the financing of Ukrainian-made long-range weapons. In total, the German minister promised a wide range of support, totaling about €5 billion.

In early June, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced that Germany would provide Ukraine with additional military aid worth €1.9 billion.
