Estonia: pro-Kremlin activist loses appeal against a ban on entry into Schengen

Pro-Kremlin activist and head of the Baltia portal Alexander Kornilov, who was banned from entering Estonia and other Schengen countries for five years at the end of 2022, failed to have the decision overturned in court.

This was reported by ERR. The final word in the court dispute was given on June 10, when the state court rejected Kornilov’s appeal.

In February 2024, Kornilov’s complaint against the decision of the Police and Border Guard Board of December 6, 2022, was rejected by the Tallinn Administrative Court, and a year later, his appeal was also rejected by the district court.

According to the contested decision, Kornilov’s long-term residence permit in Estonia was revoked. An order was also issued for Kornilov’s forced deportation to the Russian Federation, and in addition, the authorities imposed a five-year ban on his entry into the Schengen Agreement countries.

In his complaint to the court, Kornilov, who was in Russia at the time of the police decision, challenged only the part of it that concerned the entry ban.

Estonia’s Security Police had previously stated that Kornilov’s residence permit had been revoked for security reasons.

As reported, the Latvian State Security Service publicly announced that 32 people had been detained since 2016 on suspicion of espionage and other activities threatening national security in favor of Russia or Belarus.
