Dutch Minister of Defense Ruben Brekelmans said that after the transfer of all 24 F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, drones have become a new priority for military support. He said this in an interview with Ukrinform.
The Dutch Defense Minister noted that the priorities for military aid to Ukraine have changed over time: initially, it was helmets and Stinger missiles; later, Patriot systems and their components; and then F-16 fighter jets became the priority.
“We have transferred all 24 fighter jets, but we also continue to supply ammunition, spare parts, and conduct training,” said the head of the defense department.
According to him, the main focus is now on the supply of drones: “Our new priority is drones, mostly more sophisticated ones. That is, not simple FPV drones, but more advanced ones.”
The minister also noted that the Netherlands continues to supply Ukraine with air defense systems, armored vehicles, various types of ammunition, fuel, and other necessary equipment.
“In total, we provide assistance amounting to about 3-3.5 billion euros annually. And we have said that we will maintain this level of support in 2026. So we have already promised this money,” he clarified.
Due to Ukraine’s increased needs in the context of the war, the Netherlands has already used 2 billion of this year’s 3.5 billion euros, thus accelerating the pace of aid delivery.
“Our priorities now are drones. This is air defense, everything related to the F-16, as well as maritime security,” the minister concluded.
On May 26, the Dutch Ministry of Defense confirmed the shipment of the last batch of 24 F-16 fighter jets intended for Ukraine.
Ukraine received the first Dutch fighter jets in October 2024.
