Billions in military aid promised for Ukraine to hold the frontline On April 26 the 21st meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group was held. Many countries made new pledges to continue to help Kyiv restore its combat capabilities. The need is urgent – right now there is an ongoing Russian offensive in several directions of the contact line, and there is a threat to Chasiv Yar city, as well as to Kharkiv, the second-largest Ukrainian city. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin announced an additional commitment of $6 billion through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) that will allow to procure new capabilities for Ukraine from U.S. industry. "This is the largest security assistance package that we've committed to date," said Mr.Austin. The newly announced military aid package includes interceptors for Patriot and NASAMS air defense systems, anti-drone systems, and support equipment, according to Austin. In his turn, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also commented on the need for military aid for Ukraine. The Secretary General welcomed that other Allies have stepped up with new decisions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. He also pointed to the importance of German leadership in support of Ukraine, noting that Germany is the biggest European contributor of military aid. He thanked Germany for its decision to send a third Patriot system to Ukraine, adding: “I strongly believe that other Allies should follow the example of Germany.” Same time the Danish government and parliament have announced an agreement to increase funding for the Ukraine Fund, a mechanism for long-term military support for Ukraine, by an additional DKK 4.4 billion ($631 million) for 2024. The additional funds will be used primarily for direct military support to Ukraine in the form of weapons, other military equipment, and training programs. This includes ordering weapons from manufacturers and financing initiatives of other countries. The bill also provides for the possibility of direct purchases from Ukraine's defense industry "in the presence of the necessary control mechanisms." According to Canadian Defense Minister Bill Blair, Canada will donate $2.2 million to Ukraine's domestic UAV production. This is the first time Canada has directly contributed to the production of military drones in Ukraine. The donation will be made in collaboration with the U.K., according to the Canadian government's statement. Also, Canada will allocate another $9.5 million to a Czech-led ammunition initiative, which aims to purchase 500,000 155 mm shells and 300,000 122 mm shells outside of Europe for Ukraine. So, despite the efforts of Russian propaganda, there is no fatigue with Ukraine, and our partners continue to actively support Kyiv. In this way, Western countries are contributing to their own security. Because arms exports to Ukraine are stimulating the economy of these countries and boosting their global leadership. As Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski aptly underlined at the Atlantic Council meeting “aiding Ukraine is “not only a good deed. It’s also a good deal”. NATO Secretary General also shares this point of view. In his comments for CNN news, he told the same, word by word: “Aid to Ukraine 'is not charity, but an investment in our own security”.

Czech MEP Martin Hlaváček is Disrupting Free Trade with Ukraine The Czech MEP, who is an ally of former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, is trying to win the support of his colleagues in an attempt to change the rules of free trade with Ukraine. Martin Hlaváček asked all members of the European Parliament to join him in submitting amendments to further tighten restrictions on Ukrainian agricultural goods as part of continued trade liberalization measures. He made the move just before a plenary vote in Strasbourg, in which MEPs will vote on extending the free trade regime for a year, albeit with restrictions. If Hlaváček gets enough support, it would bring the process to a halt as the EU Parliament soon goes into recess ahead of the elections in early June. Then the term of Ukraine's access to the EU market expires. A protégé of Babiš, a former prime minister who made his $3.5 billion fortune in agriculture, is again submitting the amendments after similar attempts failed in February and March. "The negotiations did not lead to satisfactory results for EU farmers," Hlaváček stressed, referring to the tripartite talks between the European institutions. "That is why I still believe that our amendments can significantly contribute to improving conditions for farmers and address the shortcomings of the Commission's original proposal," he added. If approved by parliament, the Czech lawmaker's amendments would increase the risk that trade liberalization measures will not be adopted before the current ones expire in early June. Hlaváček transferred responsibility to the Council of the EU, which represents 27 member states of the European Union. "The council always has the option of accepting my amendments, and I think this is a very soft and reasonable proposal," he said. Hlaváček claims that his amendments will be "beneficial for Ukraine" and at the same time "will help prevent the deterioration of prices for goods in the EU." The MEP rejected the suggestion that his push was "last minute", saying he had been calling for the changes for "months". Hlavaček's amendments quickly drew condemnation from fellow Renew MEPs Karin Carlsbro, Urmas Paet, Petras Auštrevičius, and Morten Petersen, as well as Sandra Kalniete and Jörgen Warborn of the centre-right European People's Party. The same amendments were submitted by the Czech deputy at the previous votes, where they were supported by only a small group of MEPs. If the amendments are passed, "no agreement on a trade liberalization agreement will be reached before the end of this mandate, and pre-war tariffs will be restored," asserted Swedish MEP Karin Carlsbro. "This would send a clear signal from the European Parliament that the EU no longer supports Ukraine, which would be a victory for Putin," she added. The EU authorities should unite and condemn Martin Hlaváček and other MEPs, who have the same attitude to the issue, for attempting to weaken Ukraine, fighting against the Russian Federation and protecting Europe from the rogue state. Since the Kremlin has an impact on some MEPs, it is crucial for other MEPs to keep an eye on potential agents of influence of the Russian Federation to prevent them from taking actions aimed at making Ukraine feeble.

Morawiecki: Russia actively influences all political groups in the EU Parliament “Russia is trying to have an impact on all the groups in the European Parliament, including the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Group, which comprises the former ruling party of Poland,” said Former Prime Minister of Poland and member of "Law and Justice" Mateusz Morawiecki in an interview with Euractiv. At the end of March, an investigation by the Czech and Polish authorities revealed a pro-Russian influence operation in Europe involving a pro-Russian propaganda network. "The Russians are very active in every political group," said Morawiecki in response to the developments, adding that he was not surprised by the latest exposure of a pro-Russian influence network. He admitted that the Law and Justice party and ECR were also at risk. "I'm sure the Russians have also infiltrated the ECR Group or at least have tried to infiltrate it, and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that there are some members who are working with the Russians because they are extremely effective at recruiting people," said Mateusz Morawiecki. "I am not surprised that the Russians have infiltrated the Identity and Democracy Group. Moreover, I am sure that they are also trying to infiltrate the European People's Party and the Socialists," added Morawiecki. Although no official charges have yet been brought, the media reported, citing Czech intelligence sources, that German Alternative for Germany MP Petr Bystron had received 25,000 euros from a Russian propaganda network. Thus, the EU authorities should do their best to prevent the Russians from infiltrating the EU Parliament and having an impact on the upcoming elections in Europe.
