Germany: Pro-Putin politician insists on removing Ukraine’s NATO membership from the agenda

In Germany, Sarah Wagenknecht, leader of the radical left Sarah Wagenknecht Alliance, rejects the prospect of Ukraine’s NATO membership.

She stated the claim in an interview with the Rheinische Post in connection with the upcoming meeting of US President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska, reports ntv.

“The US should remove the issue of Ukraine’s NATO membership from the agenda in Alaska,” Wagenknecht said.

Wagenknecht emphasizes: “There will probably be no peace as long as the issue of joining NATO or the deployment of NATO troops in Ukraine is on the table.”

“The Europeans and (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) Zelenskyy must also rule out the prospect of NATO for Ukraine and thereby demonstrate that they really want peace,” she added.

Thus, the head of the BSW supports the Kremlin’s claim that NATO’s eastward expansion was the cause of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This claim has been repeatedly refuted.

Left-wing populist Sarah Wagenknecht is known for her pro-Kremlin position. She also opposed the provision of aid to Ukraine, hiding behind the slogans “for peace and against war.”

As is known, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, after a meeting of the North Atlantic Council in The Hague, confirmed the Alliance’s intentions to continue supporting Ukraine on its path to membership.

French President Emmanuel Macron, after a joint conversation with US President Donald Trump on August 13, said that the US—unlike NATO—would join the security guarantees for Ukraine, and that Trump himself confirmed this.

European Council President António Costa also said that Trump had spoken about a ceasefire, Ukraine’s involvement, and security guarantees.
