Three nations allocate $500 million for US arms supplies to Ukraine through NATO

Sweden, Norway, and Denmark will jointly allocate approximately 5 billion Norwegian kroner ($500 million) to NATO’s initiative to supply Ukraine with American weapons. This was stated in a Norwegian government statement published on Tuesday, August 5.

Norway, Sweden, and Denmark are joining forces to provide military assistance to Ukraine in order to meet its priority needs for defense equipment, with NATO coordinating this assistance.

The assistance will be provided under the new Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative. It is designed to ensure the rapid delivery of American weapons and equipment to Ukraine and to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense, in particular through additional missiles for the Patriot air defense system.

Norway will initially allocate 1.5 billion Norwegian kroner to this initiative. Together with Sweden and Denmark, Norway will finance a package worth a total of around 5 billion Norwegian kroner.

The statement noted that the Netherlands has already financed an aid package of similar value, and several more such packages will be provided in the near future under PURL.

Such aid packages may include support in the field of air defense, ammunition, and other important equipment. Each aid package will have an estimated value of $500 million, and the Supreme Allied Commander Europe will play a key coordinating role in the formation and implementation of these deliveries, including the repair and modernization of equipment already transferred.

For security reasons, the exact contents of each package will not be disclosed.

“This summer, we have witnessed Russia’s relentless continuation of its illegal attacks against Ukraine, along the front lines and against civilian targets in cities. With this contribution, we want to facilitate Ukraine’s rapid access to the necessary equipment while strengthening NATO’s cooperation on Ukraine’s defense and ensuring peace on Ukraine’s terms,” said Norwegian Defense Minister Tore O. Sandvik.

On August 4, it was reported that the Netherlands, as part of the PURL initiative, had prepared an aid package for Ukraine, which included components and missiles for the Patriot air defense system.

Germany announced last week that it would supply Ukraine with two Patriot air defense systems after reaching an agreement with the US that Berlin would be first in line to receive new systems to replace those transferred.
