During a meeting with US President Donald Trump, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told him that the determination shown by America toward Iran must also be shown toward Russia’s war in Ukraine.
She said these words at a press conference after the NATO summit, according to La Repubblica.
Meloni welcomed the start of a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Iran but noted that the same resolve should also be shown regarding Ukraine and the Gaza Strip.
“I told President Donald Trump that the same resolve (shown in the war between Israel and Iran) must be shown in two other ceasefires: in Ukraine, where Russia is unwilling to make concessions, and in Gaza, where the situation is intolerable,” she said.
Meloni positions herself as a key player both in the EU and in relations with the US. Last year’s G7 summit demonstrated her ability to overcome political differences in times of increasing fragmentation, when leaders from different countries tried to find an approach to her.
Meloni hoped that communicating with Donald Trump would strengthen her position at the center of European politics. The Italian Prime Minister was the only EU leader to attend Trump’s inauguration in January.
Giorgia Meloni also met with the US president at Mar-a-Lago. She supports nationalist views, which explains her ideological closeness with Trump.
On June 24, during a dinner at the Royal Palace in The Hague organized on the occasion of the NATO summit, Meloni sat at the same table next to President Trump.
