US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham welcomed the European Commission’s proposal on Tuesday for new sanctions against Russia.
Lindsey Graham wrote on his X account he was “very pleased” that the EU was imposing a new round of sanctions against Russia “for its barbaric invasion of Ukraine.”
“This round is different in that it targets Chinese companies that support Putin’s war machine. Without China and India, which buy 70% of Russian oil, Putin’s war machine would grind to a halt,” the senator stressed.
Lindsey Graham also noted the sanctions against the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines and the proposal to lower the price cap on Russian oil to $45 per barrel.
“Keep it up, our European allies,” Graham added.
On June 10, the European Commission presented the 18th package of sanctions against Russia.
Senator Graham, his Democratic colleague Richard Blumenthal, and 80 other co-authors have introduced a bill that would impose additional economic sanctions against Russia for refusing to agree to a ceasefire, including the imposition of a 500% tariff on goods imported from countries that purchase Russian oil.
The bill also has support in the House of Representatives.
However, according to media reports, US President Donald Trump wants to soften the sanctions in the bill.
Trump has publicly stated that he will impose new sanctions against Russia “if necessary.”
